A SIMPLE PLAN

Sam Raimi (1998)

Directed by Sam Raimi, A Simple Plan is a film in which a situation is created in order to confront its characters and to question their moral decisions (and indecisions). Set in a snowy Midwestern town, the story involves two brothers, Hank and Jacob Mitchell (Bill Paxton and Billy Bob Thornton), Hank's wife (Bridgette Fonda), and Jacob's friend Lou (Brent Briscoe).

In a remote area, Hank, Jacob and Lou find a plane that had crashed and is half buried in the snow. Not only do they discover a dead pilot, but to their surprise, a bag containing over $4 million dollars in cash, as well. While the fact that they are the only witnesses could make them instant millionaires, Jacob and Lou must first convince Hank (the most educated of the three and the role model of the town) to keep the cash. Hank's apprehension, however, leads to a forced deal among the three.

Along with all its ensuing conflicts, each of which calls for some kind of plan to resolve it, the main incident leads to the disintegration of a family and the instability of the town. Nevertheless, the film's horror lies in the characters --and in the degree to which they can be immoral-- more so than in the incidents; and in its "simple" plans, less so than in their resolutions.
