IN TOO DEEP

Michael Rymer (1999)

In Too Deep, as the film's title suggests, refers to the situation the film's protagonist finds himself in as he tries to fight crime by becoming a part of it. Directed by Michael Rymer and written by Paul Aaron and Michael Henry Brown, In Too Deep is based on a true story and explores the work of detective Jeffrey Cole (Omar Epps), whose involvement with the police force brings him face to face with "God" (LL Cool J), the city's most feared gangster.
In Too Deep Movie Review

Motivated by the scarring experiences as a child, when he was exposed to the injustice of crime and poverty living in project housing, Jeffrey plots to lure "God" and befriend him, and to earn the trust of God's loyal disciples. If he succeeds, he may turn them in to his supervisor (Stanley Tucci) eradicating, thereby, the enrooted reign. If he fails, he may lose his identity, his life or his soul.

In Too Deep offers a valuable perspective on violence and on the human tendency to suppress it or to relish it. Relying mainly on Epps' convincing performance both as the crime-fighter and as the criminal's friend and accomplice, In Too Deep studies the fine line which separates man's rationalization of violence and his dormant instinct to embrace it.
