THE SIXTH SENSE
M. Night Shyamalan
(1999)
The Sixth Sense,
directed and written by M. Night Shyamalan, follows the
troubled life of eight-year-old Cole Sear (Haley Joel
Osment), who --faithful to what his last name suggests-- is
haunted by his supernatural abilities to see and
communicate with the dead. Being sought after by the
disturbed spirits of his hometown Philadelphia, Cole must
reconcile this frightening power with his desperate desire
to be normal.
Growing more isolated from a helpless mother (Toni Collete)
and distrustful of his peers in school, Cole soon encounters
child psychologist Dr. Malcolm Crowe (Bruce Willis), who is
led by obsessive ambitions, although weakened by the thought
of his neglected wife (Olivia Williams ). Still, Malcolm
represents the only hope for dissolving the horror and
restoring sanity.
From a broader perspective, The
Sixth Sense is about the power to communicate. Dead or
alive, every character seeks to reach a level of
communication in order to deliver or obtain love, knowledge
and peace. The suspense in The Sixth Sense is
heightened mostly by its protagonists' convincing
performances and by the film's appropriate slow pace, while
the film's true horror is created by exploiting its
characters' vulnerable states and by making them ignorant of
the power of their own strength.
