About the Critic

Yazmin Ghonaim is a professional film critic who received her education in Critical Studies from the School of Film and Television at the University of California, Los Angeles, and from the University of California, San Diego. She is a member of the San Diego Film Critics Society.

After a close examination of current film criticism in both print media and online, which almost unfailingly limit reviews to a cursory look at the movie's plot, she realized a more focused and objective examination of films was necessary and desirable in order to attain a deeper appreciation of this art.

Due to the fact that it is always a challenge to communicate ideas effectively to readers who look for different answers in a film review, in which some people seek a simple recommendation while others want to know what emotions and/or thoughts a particular film tries to evoke while at the same time trying to understand how the film manages or fails to do so, she has developed a film criticism method in which she incorporates these questions into an objective analysis of the film. Her goal is to find the answers as a result of the conscious process of identifying the technical --as well as the artistic-- aspects of film without losing objectivity.
